When I was a recent college freshman, classes, homework, and hanging out with friends seemed like weekly attempts to do a Rubik's cube with a blindfold on. That's when I came across Notion. It's more than just another problem to solve. Essentially, it is like the Swiss Army knife for students. In this post, I will walk you through how I built a simple yet powerful student planner in Notion that took my life of chaos and cluttered tasks and turned it into an orchestra of tasks and deadlines.

Students today juggle a wide range of responsibilities. From classes to assignments and social life, it can get overwhelming. But what if I told you there’s a tool that can help organize your chaotic academic life? Yes, I’m talking about Notion. This versatile productivity tool is a game changer for students.

And Notion isn't just a digital notebook. It takes notes and tasks, databases and calendars, and combines them into one unified platform. Your style will influence how you should design your workspace. The thing about Notion is that it's flexible. You can build anything from a to-do list to a project tracker.

  • Collaboration: Have seamless work on group projects.

  • Integration: Bring your illustrations in sync with other tools like Google Calendar.

So, the apparent question turns to why Notion is used. The benefits are numerous:

Any student looking to stay organized will need an effective course database. But how do we go about this? Okay, let's dive in.

The first step in building your course database is simple: fulfill your basic needs. First, open Notion and create an empty page. Select small text, and it will take you to a minimalist style.

After that, start an online database. I usually name it "Course." Remember to customize this! Keep things intuitive, hide the title, rename properties, etc. Therefore, a more personalized setup is crucial as it will make things less confusing. Once done, you can add categories like Course Name, Instructor, or Credits. It needs. So open Notion and start on an empty page. If you hate clutter, choosing a minimalist style of small text is very helpful. This keeps things nice and tidy.

Next on the list will be starting an online database. I usually name it "Course." Remember to customize this! It's possible to hide the title and instead rename properties to keep things intuitive. This is an important step, as a custom setup makes things less confusing. Afterward, you can add categories like Course Name, Instructor, or Credits. These are the main details most students keep a record of.

Because you are using sample data, you can try out how the information flows. You can hide or reveal details as needed. That is why it is advised to focus on essential information. Just hide the clutter.

You can fill it in with classes, study sessions, or breaks. This way of having everything laid out helps you see the bigger picture at a glance. But why does this matter? When everything is laid out before you, it's much easier to figure out the most important thing to do next. It makes you feel you have control over it.

  • Start with an empty spreadsheet or a digital tool like Notion.

  • Label each column with the days of the week.

  • Fill in your classes and commitments.

We then want to start thinking about relation properties. This is just connecting the dots. For example, if you have a course database, you can easily link it to your timetable. This way, you can easily see which classes correspond to which assignments. It's a time saver and stops confusion.

  • Link this database to your timetable.

  • This not only organizes your information but makes it entirely manageable.

  • Visualize these blocks on your timetable.

From my own experience, learning how to manage time helps a great deal in increasing productivity and confidence. It eliminates the anxiety of needing to meet deadlines when you can see what lies before you. Anyway, don't we all need more peace in our crazy lives as students.

Hell, how satisfying is it to punch out the little checkmark on a task that got completed? Each tick marks progress, and its encouragement of progress is further motivation.

  • Organize them by priority. Which one is due soonest?

  • Check off what you've done. So feel that sense of accomplishment!

Using Buttons for Efficiency

This leads us to talk about efficiency. Buttons in digital tools can turn your tracking system on with a button, streamlining the process. New assignments can be added with a click or marked complete. For example, I once made buttons for turning tasks 'done.' It was simple yet effective. Everyone appreciates a smooth, user-friendly interface.

Imagine if you had a button that said, "Add new assignment." Click—done! You wouldn't have to run through many menus to do what you're trying to do; everything would be in your face. This would save time and energy.

Setting Personal Goals Alongside Academic Achievements

Now, what about goals? Setting personal goals with achievements is equally important. That makes it better than just studying. School is also about life. Ultimately, it's about finding ourselves, growing, and being aware. Consider these examples:

  • My goal is to read one book per month.

  • To improve your study habits, give yourself some time every evening.

A task database is your personal hub for assignments and responsibilities. Start by fiddling around and setting it up on something like Notion. It allows you to arrange your tasks however you'd like. Get your database to work for you. It can be edited to organize things better, such as deadlines, statuses, and categories. For instance, you can add a checkbox for completion, which is helpful and psychologically satisfying. Remember that rush when you check something off your to-do list? Filtering Completed vs. Pending Tasks

Filtering your tasks is one of the best features of a task database. It keeps you in the loop regarding what is in store so that you can prioritize better.
